History of the University
Grenoble's rich university heritage spans nearly seven centuries, with historic foundations dating back to 1339, 1542, and 1896. Following the major turning points of 1968, the institution was thoughtfully reorganized and later unified as Université Grenoble Alpes (UGA) in 2020. This milestone restructuring consolidated one of France's most prestigious academic centers.
The exceptional quality of research, teaching, and innovation at both Grenoble INP and UGA earned the renowned "Initiative of Excellence" (Idex) label in 2016, placing Grenoble among only a dozen elite French university sites. Today, Grenoble INP – UGA stands proud as a world-class institution, housing 42 research laboratories and training over 1,200 engineers and 200 PhD graduates annually.
